Day Three

December 29, 2003:
Today was a big day for us - a rescue mission, 6 dives and our 100th logged dive!

We started the day with a rescue mission.  A Bahamian fishing boat had been stranded south of Cat Cay for more than 24 hours.  Ellie & Red brought them diesel fuel, cigarettes and food.  After the excitement, we headed over to Doodles for our first dive of the day.  After almost an hour of bottom time on the 60 ft. patch reef system, we realized that we weren't totally sure where to boat was.  So,  for safety-sake, we did our safety stop in open water, inflated our safety sausage and surfaced.  We had been heading in the right direction, but we were about 1/4 mile from the boat.  We finished the dive with a surface swim.  We dove this site when we were on the Sea Fever in July with Lawrence, Rick & Seline.  On that trip, we dove it at night and didn't have time to get lost...the dive was cut short due to thunderstorms.

Next we moved to the Knoll where we say a large nurse shark and a moray eel.  No matter how often we see sharks and eels, they always seem to make the dives for us.  After the Knoll, we moved over to KC Hill where we saw a ton of fish.   We really liked this site.

And finally, we moved to Little Cay Sal (which is actually Orange Cay but they call it Little Cay Sal because it looks like Cay Sal).  This was a shallow reef with a lot rays, eels, turtles, ramora and juveniles.  We did an afternoon dive, a twilight dive and a night dive (number 100).  Each time we dove the site we saw more and more amazing creatures.  On the twilight dive (Scott, Sara and Bob the teacher were the only three in the water) we watched as two spotted moray fought for a hole.  On the night dive, we saw two octopus - one small and one large one.  It truly was awesome!

After the night dive, we spotted a huge barracuda on the surface.  Rob (our chef) pulled out a rod and caught him.  We were now ready for tomorrow's shark dive!
