We checked out of the Odyssey at
8:00 a.m. and the crew took us to the Blue Lagoon Resort. We said our
good-byes to them and checked in to our rooms (We said good-bye, however I
think we will see some of them later tonight – someone from the Odyssey is
taking us all to the airport).
We took our bags to our room
and decided to check out the resort. We stopped by the gift shop and looked
around; we made appointments for massages; and we went over to the dive shop
to look around. We finally found a t-shirt Samantha’s size – we couldn’t
find one in Palau or Guam…it was bizarre, really – it is really cool…baby
blue with white bands around the neck and arms and it has the Blue Lagoon
Dive Shop logo embroidered in the center.
We walked around the dive
boats and over to the beach by the dive shop before heading back to the
room. Scott went over to the salon for the first massage; I followed an hour
later. I didn’t think it was possible, but we both achieved a new level of
relaxation.
After our massages, we went
to the restaurant on property for lunch and then toured the grounds. There
are a lot of old Japanese bunkers on the island still and a lot of old
wrecks. We walked around past the dive shop and through the grocery store.
They had everything from ice cream to kim-chi. We bought some cookies for
the flight home and went back to the room for a nap.
Today is the 10th
anniversary of the Blue Lagoon Resort so everything on property is closed at
6:00 p.m. for the celebration. There was a ceremony in the banquet room with
singing, prayer and speeches (it was all in Chuukese) that lasted about an
hour. Afterwards, all of the employees and guests were treated to a buffet
dinner. It was really cool to get a glimpse of some of the local culture.
We then went back to the room
to veg out. At 11:30 p.m., our bags were in front of the lobby and we were
on our way back to the airport for our 2:25 a.m. flight to Guam (yes – 2:25
in the morning).
Twenty-six hours and five
flights later we found ourselves back in Virginia. It was a long journey,
but definitely worth it.
