Wednesday, May 21, 2008 – Day 3 Diving in Palau
Today was a great day of diving
– and fortunately, we actually got to dive! We got about 10 minutes into our
hour boat ride when one of the engines started making a strange noise. After
about 15 minutes of tinkering, we were on our way once again.
Our first dive was at Blue
Holes. It was truly an awesome dive – by far one of my favorites so far. We
started on a wall and swam till there was a large cutout. We swam into a
cylindrical-shaped tube of coral walls. This wasn’t anything like the holes
we’ve been in in the Bahamas, but definitely interesting. The coolest parts
about the Blue Holes were the various caverns and caves that shot off from
the base of the hole. Scott and I entered one of the caves briefly and it
appeared to go for a long time. Off course we hadn’t planned on doing a cave
dive so we turned around and headed back out, but it was really amazing.
From the center of the hole,
we swam around and back out to the wall where we drifted for another 25
minutes or so where we saw several white tip and black tip sharks, a couple
large wrasse, a black fin tuna, a bunch of turtles and an abundant number of
reef fish.
After a leisurely lunch and a
dip in the ocean, we were all back on the boat for our second dive. We had
asked to do a wreck this afternoon, so they took us to the Chuyo Maru. A
Japanese supply ship, the Chuyo Maru was sunk during World War II and is
sitting upright in the water. It has a ton of growth on it and a large
amount of sea life. We penetrated a portion of the wreck but saw nothing of
consequence. The water was fairly murky and the potential for a silt-out was
great, but it was still a great wreck. We saw a lionfish and spent a great
deal of time looking for a large frogfish that apparently hangs out at the
mooring line.
After the hour-long dive, we
made our way back to Neco Marine where we took a nice dip in the pool before
heading back to Cliffside. We are all going to dinner at Dragon Tei for
dinner tonight and will try to do three dives tomorrow (two day dives and a
night dive). Where ever we dive, I am sure we will not be disappointed!
